Now that metal 3D printing technology is advancing so quickly, we’re seeing a lot of companies jump on the bandwagon. Suddenly it seems as though everyone is offering metal printers and materials. 3D Systems has been in the metal game for a long time, though, and they’ve just introduced the sixth addition to their ProX line of direct metal printers. The ProX DMP 320 was designed for high-volume industrial applications in the medical, aerospace and automotive industries, among others, and it’s expected to reduce manufacturing time and costs while producing precise, high-quality, complex parts.
“With the ProX DMP 320, we’ve leveraged our collective expertise in metal additive manufacturing to pair best-in-class productivity and repeatability with exceptional outcomes in key industrial materials,” said Mark Wright, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at 3D Systems. “We’ve been working closely with leading customers through extensive beta testing of this machine and the feedback we have received distinguishes this printer as one primed to transform expectations for timelines, process and results.”
The ProX DMP 320 has two configurations: one is optimized for titanium, the other for stainless steel and nickel super alloy. Specifications include:
- 275 x 275 x 420 mm build volume
- Quick-swap build modules and fast powder recycling
- Low O2 (25 ppm) during builds, creating parts of high strength and chemical purity
- Streamlined print process, allowing for versatile applications
The new model is also expected to reduce operating costs by reducing argon gas consumption and offering centralized maintenance management and serial manufacturing workflow support. 3D Systems was painstaking in the printer’s development; the DMP 320’s preset build parameters were developed from the outcome of nearly half a million prints. The build parameters allow for predictable and repeatable prints of just about any shape. The printer is also fast, with its multiple configurations making changing materials a breeze.

3D Systems will be displaying the ProX DMP 320 at CES 2016, which is taking place from January 6-9 at Sands Expo in Las Vegas. The printer has been receiving some very positive feedback so far; Jon Green, COO of GPI Prototype & Manufacturing Services, Inc. has called it “the best I’ve seen in the production of titanium.”
