Last month we saw the launch of what ended up being the most successful crowdfunding project for a 3D printer ever. The Micro 3D printer by M3D raised over $3.4 million from 11,000 backers, seeking to help develop their $299 consumer based device. Clearly there is a very strong market for small, affordable, entry level printers out there. A company called New Matter, formerly IdeaShaper, announced today that within a few weeks they will be launching their very own crowdfunding project for yet another affordable 3D printer. This printer will be called the MOD-t, and from the looks of it, will be a small, modern looking, affordable device.
New Matter has yet to announce the exact date, or any of the specifications for their printer. They also have not stated what the price will be, only giving the hint that it will likely be priced quite a bit below the average 3D printers out on the market, saying, “Other ‘entry-level’ printers retail for $1300 or more. With MOD-t, you can start building your own objects at a fraction of the price.”
The MOD-t printer will be based on fused deposition modeling technology, and those who back their eventual crowdfunding project will get a “special discount” on the printer’s price.
New Matter was co-founded by Steve Schell, and Bill Gross, and is located in Pasadena, California. The main drive behind the company has been to make 3D printing “accessible to everyone.” They are also planning an online library of ready-to-print 3D objects upon the printer’s launch.
