Over the past couple of years, cosplay has gained a lot of traction thanks in part to 3D printing technology. Cosplay is an art form that involves creating and wearing costumes of characters from various movies, TV shows, historical events and video games. 3D printing has acted as a means in helping these hobbyists/artists create costumes exactly how they want.
We have covered numerous 3D printed costumes in the past, many of which have been modeled after movie and video game characters. However, this latest creation by a company called Crimson Coscrafts may be the most incredible yet.
Crimson Coscrafts, working with several partners, including Graphix Monster and Armory Props, was able to create a 3D printed ‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ suit which is worn by the protagonist in the upcoming video game. That game, which is slated to be released on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is the successor to the 2013 game, ‘Batman: Arkham Origins’.
“I worked on all the 3D modelling of the characters armour and Helmet with a few revisions from my partner in crime Russ,” Stevie Dee, of Crimson Coscrafts tells 3DPrint.com. “We worked closely together [with our partners] and got as many reference pictures as possible, CONSTANTLY changing the 3d models when new material would be released on the Arkham Knight. “
The suit, which was 3D printed by Russel Jeschke of Graphix Monster, was actually quite difficult to design since very few images of the character and the suit have been made available. In the end though, they feel as though they replicated it quite well.
Once the suit had been completely 3D printed, Russ proceeded to sand it down, while also getting help from a man named Jeremy Sloan of Armory Props, who helped in the sanding and finishing process.
“Jeremie Was kind enough to create a buck for the visor so we could get the visor Vacformed similar in vain to a Halo helmet,” Dee tells us. “All pieces have been cast in a number of different Rubbers and Resins to get the best efect for that particular area.”
As for the helmet itself, the team made it using a few interesting techniques which made it as close to the original design as possible. For an individual who wears it, they can see quite clearly through it, making it the perfect helmet for this Arkham Knight costume.
As for what’s next for this talented team of designers, they now turn their attention to creating yet another character suit from the Arkham Knight video game. They have already begun designing the 3D model for the Red Hood character. We should see these results sometime later this year.
“Even though Russ is on the other side of the world, we communicated very well and when we need something done for one another it is done within a day,” says Dee.
