The Guinness Book of World Records is known for its often amazing, sometimes odd, records that it keeps. From how many eggs a person can eat in a given amount of time, to the most children anyone has ever had, the Guinness World records will be able to tell you it all.
On Friday, April 4th, at 3PM, the public is invited to an event in which LeTourneau University will try and set a new Guinness World Record. LETU will try and have 50 3D printers all print the same item, all at the same time. The event will take place in the Solheim Arena of the Solheim Recreation Center on the LETU campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave.
You may be wondering why the University has so many 3D printers readily available. Many Universities and colleges have 3D printers, but no more then a few on hand at a time. LeTourneau University, on the other hand, requires all incoming freshman to build their own 3D printers, which they can use throughout their college education.
“The Guinness World Record has accepted our record application to create this new international world record and claim the title, if we are successful,” said LETU Dean of Engineering Dr. Ron DeLap. “We expect to make history on Friday. To my knowledge, LETU is the only university in the country to require all of its incoming freshmen engineering students to build their own individual 3D printers. Many schools have teams that build 3D printers, but we are, I believe, the first to require that all incoming freshmen build and operate their own individual 3D printers, which the students then can use throughout their college career to build prototypes of things they design.”
All 50 3D printers will be set up in the Arena in a U-shape, and at the same time print out a token to commemorative the record setting day. The record will be measured by the total number of printers operating at one time. The printers are owned by students of the University ranging from freshman to graduate students.
